PhD position: “Forens-OMICS” on biological fluids for time since deposition estimation in forensic contexts

About the Project
Applications are welcomed for a PhD (via MPhil) studentship to join the “Forens-OMICS” team in the Research Institute for Field Archaeology and Forensic Taphonomy, within the School of Law and Policing. The studentship is tenable for up to 3.5 years full time [subject to satisfactory progress]. Both Home and EU/International applicants may apply but EU/International applicants will be required to pay the difference in tuition fees between the UK and EU/International fee rates. The studentship will provide successful applicants with an annual stipend in line with UKRI rates (2024/25 rate £19237 per year) subject to satisfactory progress.
It is expected the successful applicant will commence September 2024.
Project Description
This PhD project builds on the expertise developed in the “Forens-OMICS” team funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and led by Dr Noemi Procopio, on the application of multiple omics strategies to address forensic issues.
Specifically, this project will investigate how multi-omics approaches can help to address Time Since Deposition (TsD) estimations for biological fluids found on the crime scene. Information on the time when a stain was deposited at a crime scene can be valuable in forensic investigations as, for example, can link a DNA-identified stain donor with a crime or provide PMI estimation from cadaveric fluids. Analytical strategies may include transcriptomics (RNA-seq), proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and 16s rRNA metabarcoding for identifying biomarkers correlated with increasing TsD.
