Your Responsibilities

The ERC PresentDead project is looking for a bio-anthropologist (archaeo-anthropologist) for a 2 year fixed-term postdoctoral position to analyse and interpret osteological and taphonomic information on human remains from early medieval reopened inhumation graves in Austria, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia with an archaeothanatological approach.

The candidate will be involved in several work packages of the project, to include the development of methodologies, analysis and interpretation of case studies and visual reconstruction of formation processes. The candidate will work in collaboration with other team members in order to:

visit archival collections in Austria, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia to analyse deposited human remains according to the PresentDead protocol for human bone taphonomy
evaluation of archaeological documentation (photos, graphics, written records) of previous excavations with an archaeothanatological approach
contribute to the PresentDead protocol for the analysis of human remains from reopened inhumation graves
perform data entry and analysis
collaborate with the 3D modelling expert
write up reports and contribute to research outputs for publication as a co-author, and in close cooperation with other team members

Your Profile

  • PhD in bioarchaeology (archaeo-anthropology)
  • Experience in the archaeothanatological study of deposited human remains
  • Experience with the osteological study of fragmentary and commingled human remains
  • Experience with the recording and study of bone surface modification
  • Experience in statistical analysis
  • Very good written and spoken English skills
  • Ability to collaborate constructively in a team
  • Good time management skills
  • Good written and verbal publication skills for e.g. publication, conference presentations, and research dissemination

We offer an annual gross salary of € 66,532.20 for a fulltime position.

The ERC project PresentDead aims to investigate the practical, mental and emotional dimensions of human interactions with graves, human remains and artifacts in early medieval Central and Eastern Europe (5th to 8th century AD). Based on archaeological and textual evidence, different contexts of contact will be investigated through an innovative approach combining state-of-the-art scientific methods, technical solutions and new theoretical approaches.
