The Alpine landscape – the distinctive, seemingly unchanging face of the Earth – is the result of the ever-changing interaction of endogenic and exogenic forces. The characteristic blend of the landscape elements today is, to a large degree, the result of the interplay of glacial and fluvial process during the Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles. With onset of human occupation and land-use the human influence has become ever-increasing. Reconstructions of past changes, transience, and processes are fundamental to understand the present state and the future landscape evolution. The invited keynote speakers present their research and perspectives on the landscape evolution of the Alps and their forelands encompassing reconstructions of the past landscape changes both within the Alps and their forelands at glacial-interglacial timescales to more recent onset of the human influence and into the future.
