How can the arts touch people, and be an inspiration for the sciences?

Parallel Session at the Sustainability Science Forum 2022 – Shaping Research for our Future

Lieu de l'événement

Promising formats for developing possible pathways of change are urgently needed. The challenge of crossing boundaries between the sciences and the arts in a more meaningful way in research and funding is not new, yet it has undoubtedly acquired even greater significance in these crisis-ridden times.

The arts, with their methods, strategies and specific use of technologies, make an important contribution to the mediation and awareness of human existence in their living environment. The arts have the skill to touch and sensitise people on different levels. Through emotions and sensory experiences, they create access to complex themes and contents. They make the invisible visible, comprehensible and tangible. The arts usually place people, nature, society and science at the centre of their research and create access to completely new realms and realities through the use of the imagination. They use emotions and experiences as a driving force to discover the world around them.

This parallel session will showcase two students’ projects that use design and artistic approaches to experience the environment in a sensory and empathic way. You are invited to learn more about the methods and technologies used and experience them in practice. The aim is to explore and discuss the potential of such projects. They serve to raise awareness and promote more inclusive collaborations with the sciences towards a sustainable future.

Curiosity, experimentation and interest in transdisciplinary collaboration are basic principles to engage in the workshop. Together we will gather participants' experiences and develop recommendations to promote the impact and relevance of the arts and the sciences in addressing societal challenges.
