The Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe (FASE) will be hosting its biannual one-week Basic Course in Forensic Anthropology and Symposium at the Department of Medical Biology, Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC), Location AMC, the Netherlands, from August 26 – 31, 2024.

The course is intended for students and starting practitioners with a background in (biological) anthropology, biology, forensic medicine, archaeology etc. taking their first steps in the field of forensic anthropology.

The course will encompass a combination of activities including lectures, practical sessions and guided tours facilitated by senior FASE members and faculty of the Amsterdam UMC and the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI). The lectures will include a review of human osteology and odontology and will cover basic topics in forensic anthropology such as the biological profile estimation, trauma analysis, human taphonomy, cremated remains etc. During the practical sessions participants will, amongst others, be working with juvenile- and adults skeletal remains from an archaeological collection with known demographic information and modern prosected and cremated remains obtained through the body donation program of the Department of Medical Biology, Amsterdam UMC, Location AMC.
