Position description
As the Junior Forensic Anthropologist, you will collaborate with forensic pathologists and anthropologists, reporting directly to our Chief Forensic Anthropologist. Your role will include providing forensic anthropology services including conducting consultations on fleshed and skeletonized remains, and working on collaborative projects. This position will also involve digital forensic anthropology (postmortem CT scanning), radiologic evaluation of pediatric bone disease, and pediatric forensic bone pathology.
The role of Junior Forensic Anthropologist assists our agency in advancing our forensic investigations. This multi-faceted position requires exceptional analytical and collaborative skills, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and complex cases involving medical forensics. The ideal candidate will demonstrate: 1) Proficiency in forensic anthropology, 2) Strong communication and teamwork capabilities, and 3) Experience or desire to pursue expertise with digital forensic techniques and medical imaging.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Chief Forensic Anthropologist and our forensic pathologists to analyze skeletal trauma, bone disease, and developmental abnormalities, with a focus on pediatric cases.
- Conduct forensic anthropological analysis to determine age, sex, ancestry, and trauma or disease patterns.
- Assist law enforcement in identifying unknown decedents through skeletal analysis.
- Utilize post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) for skeletal evaluations and trauma assessments.
- Provide expert digital forensic anthropology services, using advanced imaging technology to assess bone structure and injuries.
- Perform radiologic analyses of pediatric bones with routine and ultra-high-resolution imaging.
- Identify and document pathological conditions, congenital anomalies, and trauma, contributing to the medico-legal assessments.
- Conduct bone dissections to determine pathological conditions and trauma-related findings in osseous structures.
- Collaborate with forensic pathologists on bone pathology assessments, ensuring accurate documentation for forensic reports.
- Prepare bone samples for histological examination to evaluate microstructural changes.
- Conduct analyses to support findings related to disease, injury, or trauma in pediatric cases.
- Lead or participate in data collection and analysis focused on pediatric forensic anthropology, bone pathology, and trauma analysis.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences to advance knowledge in the field of forensic anthropology and forensic pathology, particularly in those areas that have a pediatrics focus.
- Participate in educational initiatives, delivering lectures, workshops, or training sessions to internal staff or external audiences.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Anthropology or a related field (PhD preferred).
- At least entry-level proficiency in one of postmortem CT scanning, bone histology, or general radiologic imaging.
- Must have proficiency with both Apple and PC computers, and software including Microsoft Office (Outlook 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills are a must.
- Must be able to successfully complete a background investigation (including a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening).
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be willing and able to travel domestically and internationally as required (must possess or be willing to obtain a passport).
- Must be comfortable working with disturbing medical content, including photographs and investigative materials that many may find objectionable.
- Must be willing to work odd hours, including on-call shifts and overnight duties for special projects.
Compensation
$65,000 (Master's level)
$100,000 (PhD level)
